- Course description:
Applied Linear Algebra: Second course in linear algebra from a
computational yet geometric point of view. Elementary Hermitian
matrices, Schur'ss theorem, normal matrices, and quadratic forms.
Moore-Penrose generalized inverse and least square problems. Vector
and matrix norms. Characteristic and singular values. Canonical forms.
Determinants and multilinear algebra. Prerequisites: Math 20F or Math
Linear Algebra and Its Applications.

- 5 homeworks (2% each)
- 7 quizzes (2% each; lowest 2 will be dropped)
- 2 midterms (20% each)

- Nov 21: Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone! I realize that some of
you are not able to come to class today, as you are traveling;
however, it would be unfair to those who made arrangements to be in
class for the quiz to cancel the quiz this late. Thus, quiz 6 will
take place today as planned — if you are not able to make it,
keep in mind that I will pick your best 5 out of 7 quizzes at the end.

- Nov 14: We worked on problem 6 in section 5.2 (pg 250) in the
textbook. We did part (a) in class. For part (b) consider two cases:
Case 1: b=c=0; since A^2=I, it follows that (a=+1 & d=-1) or (a=-1 &
d=+1) since A is not I or -I, and so tr(A)=0 and det(A)=-1. Now
consider the second case, Case 2, where b not=0 or c not=0; in either
case a=-d, so tr(A)=0 and det(A)=a(-a)=-a^2=-1.

- Nov 5: A reminder about handing in homeworks: when you hand in a
homework it must be your own work; it is OK to discuss homework
problems with others (classmates, TAs, instructor); it is also OK to
look things up in the literature, or online. However, if you use
another source, you must cite it in your assignment — no grades
will be deducted for providing a citation. But it is not permitted to
copy someone else's work and hand it in as your own. A good guideline
for discussing homeworks with others is to do the final write-up of
your paper on your own, making sure you understand what you write.
Remember that the homeworks are worth little (only 2%), and so you will
incur more grade loss not doing it (since you will lack the practice
necessary for quiz/midterm/exam performance) than the 2% you will get
by copying someone else's work.

- Nov 2: Today we are finishing chapter 4. Practice exercises:
4.3:1-11, and 4.4:1-4,13,14.
- Nov 1: Quiz 4 on Friday, Nov 2. The quiz will cover the material
in chapter 3. You are not responsible for the material related to
Fourier Series — we'll look into it at the end of the course if
there is time.

- Oct 3: Quiz 1 will take place on Friday. It will cover sections
1-5 in chapter 1. You should prepare by reviewing the lecture notes,
and doing practice exercises. The first homework will be posted
- Oct 3: The first chapter of the book is mostly review. Try to do
as many problems as you can — if you are familiar with the
material, you can do less; if you are rusty, you should attempt more
of the problems. I will give you a smaller set of "essential" problems
starting with chapter 2.
- Oct 2: Yesterday we covered sections 1.4 and 1.5. We are going to
continue tomorrow, and be done with chapter 1 by the end of the week.
Please continue working on the relevant problems in the textbook.
Reminder that the first quiz is on Friday.
- Oct 1: A reserve request for our textbook has been submitted to
- Sep 28: Today in class we covered the introductory sections 1.1,
1.2 and 1.3. You should do the corresponding Problem Sets in the book:
1.2 starting on page 9, and 1.3 starting on page 15. You should do as
many of them as possible — it is a good review of the
prerequisites of this course. The quizzes and the homeworks will be
based on the problem sets in the textbook.
